Deidre Mitchell: Grief Gets a New Point of View
Our newest staff member, Deidre Mitchell , is getting more than the usual fanfare for a new hire, but it's because she's bringing fresh ideas for connecting people who've experienced loss.
More than anything, Mitchell recognizes the power of socializing to bring back a sense of belonging and normalcy for people who've lost a close relative or friend.
This month she's trying out one of her ideas for bringing people out of their emotional bunkers. "Reticence is normal," she said. "And so is the feeling that it's too soon to be enjoying oneself again."
Mitchell reminds us that there's no established timeline for this delicate transformation, but avoiding social situations for too long may be an indicator that you need a nudge.
Be advised, however, that the monthly book club she's launching on October 15th
isn't at all about self help.
"The Countryside Breakfast Club is an invitation to enjoy a piece of literature, a light-hearted romance, or just about anything in between, "Mitchell said. "Together we'll choose something suitable, and by that I mean completely enjoyable and interesting."
Mitchell brings an artistic temperament to her work at Countryside. She is an accomplished music and drama instructor and a former contract singer with the Nashville Symphony.
However, she wants to make sure there are no pretensions or judgments. The invitation is open to all and participants are simply being encouraged to get out of their homes, read for fun, converse with others and enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee or two and some treats.
"The book or books we choose are nothing more than vehicles for getting together and having a good time," Mitchell said.
Beverages, snacks and a comfortable setting are compliments of Countryside Funeral Homes
