Wladyslaw “Walter” Moniuszko passed away on November 13, 2023 at The Oaks Senior Living Community in Bartlett.
Walter, son of
Wladyslaw and Leokadi,
was born on September 15, 1929, in Poland.
In 1940,
during World War II, he was taken by Russian forces and sent to a Siberian work camp where he became a shepherd. When the war ended, as a refugee, he traveled to several countries including India, Africa, Palestine and England where he completed his high school education, attended higher education and became a mechanical engineer.
He met his wife, Stephanie, in England and was married on July 24, 1954. They immigrated to America in 1956. In 1960 an engineering opportunity brought them to Chicago which, coincidently, was the birthplace of Walter’s mother. They lived in a Polish neighborhood of Chicago in a small apartment which Stephanie described as similar to the apartment in which the television show “The Honeymooner’s” was filmed. They enjoyed dancing, entertaining friends, playing cards and reading about history. In 1960, after the birth of their first child they left Chicago and moved to their forever home in Bensenville. Seven years later they were blessed with their second child.
Walter was a devout Catholic. He was a long-time parishioner of a local church. He prayed every day before he slept and kept a picture of Jesus above his headboard.
Walter was an accomplished athlete. He competed in several sports including soccer, volleyball, track, tennis and golf. As he aged and was unable to participate in physical sports, he began playing bridge to quench his thirst for competition.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife after 61 years of marriage, his brother, Jozef, and sister, Irene. Today Walter is survived by his daughter Janet, son-in-law Jim, son Paul and daughter-in-law Kerrie.
