William J. Kunz, of Rockford, Beloved husband of Helen (nee: Zyms); loving father of Nancy (John) Neuner and Sue (Dan) Bunce; dear grandfather of Jonathan (Rhonda), Erin, Mark (Heidi), Jennifer and great grandfather of Jaden, Noah, Lucas and Lillian.
Born September 28, 1921 in Bergenfield, N.J. to William Peter and Frances (nee: Eldershaw) Kunz, he married Helen on September 9, 1945 in Tappan, New York. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division from 1942-1945 as a field artillery forward observer for the 15th Infantry Regiment. William participated in Ten Campaigns, including five amphibious landings in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Germany and Austria. Awards include The Purple Heart, Bronze Star with “V”, Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation and French Croix-De- Guerre; plus associated campaign ribbons and battle stars, and was the author of “Third and Ten, 3rd Infantry Div. in WWII.
In 1953 William and Helen moved from Rockland County, New York to Rockford, where William was employed as a senior electronics engineer in the Barber-Colman Company, Industrial Instruments Division for 31 years; retiring in 1984. An active musician in the New York City area from 1938-1942. He continued this activity from the 1960’s thru the 1980’s, playing drums, vibes and harmonica. He was a former member of Rockford Local 240 A.F.M., Charter member in 1956 of Christ United Methodist Church in Rockford
Graveside services will be held Monday, August 4th, 12:00 noon, at Arlington Cemetery, Rockford.
