William John “Bill” Hall Sr., 85, retired, the dear husband of Lillian A. Hall, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010.
He was beloved by his wife of 65 years and their four children. Born in Chicago, to railroad man George D. Hall and Martha Schmidt Hall, William attended Proviso East High School, where he excelled in pole vault and track. At that time, he met his lifelong sweetheart. They were married at the Good Shepherd Church in Maywood, Ill. William was a quietly religious man. A member and elder of Grace Lutheran Church since 1961, he loved the community of the congregation and its pastor. He helped lay the cornerstone of a new sanctuary in 1967, and worked throughout the years with his friends to maintain and improve the church property.
Bill was a proud union man, a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 73 and an FDR Democrat. He was socially conservative, kind, honest, and always willing to help others. He deplored the “wars of choice” he saw in his lifetime, especially the current conflicts. His work ethic was indomitable and inspiring.
Equally adept in a machine shop or with an artist’s pad, Bill helped design and build everything from Cub Scout theme projects as a troop leader to structural additions to his house. He played the harmonica and cards with skill and enthusiasm. He swam, fished, loved to ice skate, and camp.
His sense of humor was keen, even in the most trying circumstances. He enjoyed both ends of a prank. He was an excellent dancer. He enjoyed an occasional stout and, sometimes, a pink squirrel.
His gregarious personality and twinkling blue eyes will be sorely missed, and his memory cherished by everyone who knew this special man. Surviving to mourn his passing are his wife of 65 years; four children, Bonnie Lee Stanley, William J. Jr., Randal Alan and Russel Andrew; and seven grandchildren, Tracy Lee Stanley, William J. Hall III, Scott Arthur Stanley, Ryan John Hall, Windsor Paige Hall, Ph.D., Brett Russel Hall and Jody David Hall.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at Grace Lutheran Church, 780 S. Bartlett Road, Streamwood. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
