Warren C. Volkening of Elgin passed away at home Nov. 1, 2009. He was born Nov. 8, 1926 to Herman and Alma Volkening, Jr. nee Radde. On March 13, 1948 he was married to Arlene Van Alstine at St. John Lutheran Church. They recently celebrated their 61st anniversary. He has two sons, Stephen (Mary Jo) of Joliet and Michael (Kris) of Elgin.
  
  Warren served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was active in Scouting as a leader of Pack 16, in Troop 16 and as a merit badge counselor. He enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, working in his garden and planting pine trees he grew from seed. He attended Calvary Lutheran Church. Warren was a kind thoughtful and loving man who will be missed by his family and friends.
  
  He is survived by his loving wife Arlene, sons Stephen and Michael, grandsons Erik (Sarah) of Wheaton and Todd (Jen) of Salt Lake City, UT, his brother, Willis (Marion) of Elgin and a nephew Dale (Shirley) of Wisconsin.
  
  He was preceded in death by his parents and nephews Craig Volkening and Tom Van Alstine.
  
  Funeral will be held 10:00a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at Calvary Lutheran Church 535 N. McLean Blvd. Elgin, 60123. He will lie in state from 9:30a.m. until time of service. Interment Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Tuesday 3:00 – 9:00p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 95 South Gilbert St. (at Middle St.) South Elgin.
