Walter Kondratowicz

Walter F. Kondratowicz, M.D., January 4, 1922 – December 18, 2017. Physician and Surgeon, Medical Educator, and Administrator.
Beloved son of the late Emily (nee Sosonka) and the late Ambrose Kondratowicz. Loving brother of his late siblings, Sabina, Harriet, and Chester Kondratowicz. Married 64 years to his beloved and devoted wife Evelyn (Wheeley) Kondratowicz, R.N. Loving father to three sons, Steven (Nancy) John (Cheryl), and Michael and one daughter, Diane Kondratowicz. Grandfather to Andrew, Kelsey, Darby, Jillian, and Robert. Great grandfather to Charles and Sage.
Born and raised in Chicago.
Graduate of Lane Technical High School and Wilbur Wright College.
Graduated from Loyola University Medical School in 1947. Thereafter, Dr. Kondratowicz completed his Physician Internship and Residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He trained and was Board Certified in Internal Medicine, with a specialization in Hematology and Oncology.
Dr. Kondratowicz established and maintained a private medical practice in Chicago for over three decades with affiliations at various local hospitals, including: Alexian Brothers Hospital (then, Chicago location), St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, St. Mary’s of Nazareth Hospital, and Ravenswood Hospital Medical Center. While at Ravenswood, he served as Director of Medical Education and the Transitional Residency Program. He was appointed as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago; in this capacity, Dr. Kondratowicz received the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence in the College of Medicine, 1978, as designated by the Medical Student Council.
Professional affiliations included, for decades, the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, in which he was involved in committee work, and the Chicago Medical Society.
For over seventy years, Dr. Kondratowicz enjoyed a long affiliation with the Alexian Brothers religious order, including serving: on the medical staff at the hospital’s Chicago location; as President, for a time, of the Hospital Foundation; as the designated physician for students at the former Alexian Brothers’ School of Nursing, and, in his retirement, as a member of the Medical Relations Committee. In these capacities, he cherished his longstanding professional connection with the Alexian order and, in fact, the personal friendships that he and his wife had with many of the Brothers.
Post retirement he developed, for various Illinois hospitals, computer program software for tracking continuing medical education credits.
Over his lifetime, Dr. Kondratowicz’ interests – many of which were self-taught -- included: woodworking (clocks, furniture, and a row boat made with his sons in their youth), oil painting, computer programing, music (organ and accordion) and photography.
