Thomas J. McVittie, 86, of Bartlett, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, with loved ones by his side.
Tom was born on December 15, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from DePaul Academy, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving proudly and honorably as a member of helicopter squadron HMR-261, the “Flying Tigers,” for four years, three months, and two days (as he would say).
Upon his return, he enrolled in college courses where he met his future wife, Judith Ross (Judy), with whom he shared nearly 58 years of marriage and three children, Nora, Nancy, and Tom.
Earning an Engineering degree from Northern Illinois University, Tom had a 38-year career with Recon Optical, a defense contractor in Barrington, Illinois.
Tom truly enjoyed life, and approached everything with a positive attitude and a great sense of humor. He was an avid golfer, and in later years, enjoyed smoking cigars, watching the wildlife in his backyard, and spending time with family.
He is survived by his beloved wife Judy and children Nora McVittie, Nancy McVittie (Shayne) and Thomas P. McVittie (Kelly). Granddaughters Makenna and Riley were his pride and joy. Tom is also survived by cherished siblings James McVittie (Fran) and Joan Stasiak (Ken), and was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James and Kathleen McVittie, and siblings William McVittie and Mary Pirovano, whose memories he treasured.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. For information, please contact Countryside Funeral Home & Crematory at 630-289-7575.
