Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marlene (nee Jourdan), his daughter, Julie, his son Charles (Lynnette), his three grandchildren, Zachary, Amanda, and Noah, and his brother, Sterling Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Melburn Smith, his mother, Ethel Pearl (Scobey) Smith, his brother, Vernon Smith, and his sister, Lillas Boudreau.
Sherman was born on February 22, 1941 in Somerville, MA, and spent his formative years in Somerville and Braintree, MA. He was especially fond of playing baseball as a child and young adult. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Machine and Manufacturing from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA in 1962.
Sherman moved to Illinois in 1962, after being recruited to work at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL. He was employed as a Senior Technician working on myriad projects and receiving numerous awards over his 42 years of service. He enjoyed running and roller-blading on the Argonne grounds and watching the white deer and other wildlife before work and on his lunch breaks. He retired in 2002.
Sherman enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963, receiving his naval training at Great Lakes Naval Station. He was in active duty service from 1964-1967 as a Communications Technician stationed at the U.S. Navy Naval Communications Station in Honolulu, HI. He served his country honorably and was a proud U.S. Navy veteran throughout his life.
Sherman met his wife, Marlene, in 1962, at a dance sponsored by a YMCA in LaGrange, IL. They had a three year courtship during which they were especially fond of dancing together and weekly movie dates. They were married at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Broadview, IL on March 6, 1965. Sherman was a devoted and loving husband during his 59 year marriage to Marlene. Sherman and Marlene purchased their first home in Broadview, IL where they raised their children. Sherman welcomed his first child, Julie in 1968 and his son, Charles in 1972. He was a loving father who enjoyed spending time with his children, taking an active interest in their hobbies and interests, and taking them on special outings like riding the bike trails, roller-skating, and swimming at the Broadview Park District. As his children matured, he enjoyed celebrating the important events in their lives and their accomplishments. He welcomed his daughter-in-law, Lynnette, into the family and he took great joy in his three grandchildren, Zachary, Amanda, and Noah, as they grew from young children into adults. Sherman and Marlene moved to their current home in Elgin in their later years. He took great pleasure in going to Senior Water Aerobics, walking, and going to movies with Marlene. His greatest joy and comfort in life was his relationship with his loving wife and companion, Marlene. He was an active member of Hosanna Lutheran Church in St. Charles, IL. Sherman's religious faith was very important to him, and he loved reading the Bible and daily devotions.
