Sharon Marie (Portell) Wendorf, 56, of Elgin, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2015, from lung cancer. Sharon was born on January 8, 1959 to Richard C. and Louanne Snoddy, in Chicago, Illinois. She married Stephen on October 4, 1997 and is survived by him, her daughter, Tina Portell of Tucson, AZ, stepdaughter, Stephanie Wendorf of Longmont, CO, grandchildren, Julien and Tatianna Agee of Elgin, IL, three sisters, Kim Thomas and Michelle Carter of California and Theresa Bletsas of Athens, Greece, and stepfather, Tony Portell of Schaumburg, IL. Preceding her in death were her parents and brother, David.
Sharon attended Chicago Public Schools and went on to CPS Dept. of Vocational and Practical Arts Education to earn her LPN degree in 1980, graduating as Valedictorian of her class. She worked in a variety of settings including hospital, dermatology, private care, private psychiatric practice, hand surgery, as Medical Dept. Manager at Kane County Juvenile Justice Center, where she developed the STD program there, McHenry County Mental Health Center (before closure) and at Greater Elgin Family Care Center, at McHenry, IL, before leaving her profession to treat her illness for 19 months.
Sharon was devoted in her love for God, family and her cats. She enjoyed many interests including ancestry (she traced her family back 33 generations), geocaching, travel, camping, reading, orchids and music (especially the Beatles). Sharon was an alto in the Elgin Choral Union for many years and she was an active parishioner at St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church, served on the vestry and coordinated the churches involvement in the Elgin soup kitchen program for several years with her husband.
Memorial visitation Saturday, May 23, at 9:30 a.m. until the time of memorial service 10:30 a.m., at St Hugh of Lincoln, on the SE corner of Randall and Highland in Elgin, IL (847-695-7695). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Assn or the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
