Ruth Duran

October 20, 1942 — December 1, 2015

On December 1st, 2015, our beloved sister Ruth Durán Mendoza died peacefully and confident in her Creator’s promise of everlasting life.

Ruth was born in Lima, Perú, on 20th October, 1942, and is survived by her siblings Rubén and Judy, her sister-in-law, Jean, her brother-in-law Scott, her nieces Rebeca, Sara, Anna, and Camila, her nephew Christopher and her grandniece Arabella.

A graduate of Lima High School, Ruth pursued her university studies in education at Normal Panamericana in Lima, Perú, and taught at Escuela América, Colegio América del Callao, and Colegio Andino. Having earned a Fulbright scholarship in 1968, Ruth continued her education at Scarritt College in Nashville, Tenessee, earning a B.A. in Behavioral Science in 1970. Upon her return to Perú, Ruth worked as an administrator at the Canadian International Development Agency in Lima, Perú.

In response to a fervent desire to serve in the church, Ruth entered the Lutheran Bible Institute in California in 1987, earning an Associate’s Degree in Biblical Studies, followed by a Certificate of Studies at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois, where in 1996 she was given the “Confessor of Christ Award” for her faithful dedication to study and ministry in the face of adversity, having survived a liver transplant in September 1995. Ruth served as part of the staff at Iglesia Luterana Sagrada Familia from 1997 to 2004, and she received a call as a lay mission developer to Santa Cruz Lutheran Church, Chicago, Illinois, in 2004. She was commissioned as an Associate in Ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on June 10, 2005. She retired in 2010.

During the last three years, Ruth has enjoyed living with Rubén’s family in Carol Stream and worshiping at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Her loving nature, her joy for life and her sound faith are her legacy. We praise God for the gift of life, the life of Ruth Durán Mendoza.

Per Ruth’s wishes, a Memorial Service has been scheduled for Saturday, February 13th, 2016, 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. Fifth Avenue, P.O. Box 3850, St. Charles, Illinois 60174.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ruth’s memory. All proceeds will be shared through a Ruth Duran Scholarship Fund established in her honor.
