Dr. Roy Steven Scheck, Jr. died peacefully in his home in Itasca on October 28th, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones and memories.
Born May 2nd, 1952, to Elaine Scheck and Roy Scheck, Sr., Roy was a lifelong Itasca resident who remembered, as a child, roaming its magical streets and alleys. Although Roy left Itasca to attend Campion High School and eventually Harvard University, he had no intention of staying away. While driving to Massachusetts for his first year of college, Roy informed his father that he would return to Itasca to be the town doctor. That’s exactly what he did. After graduating from Chicago Medical School, Roy opened a family practice in Itasca that he maintained until his retirement in 2020.
While attending medical school, Roy befriended Douglas Anderson, who introduced him to his sister Debbie Anderson. Debbie would become Roy’s best friend, dearest supporter, and love of his life. Although their first date on Debbie’s brother’s sailboat did not exactly go smoothly, the two soon learned that Roy’s exuberance paired with Debbie’s calm strength (and hand near the tiller) was a joyful way not just to sail, but to live. Roy and Debbie married in 1980, and remained married for 45 years, until Roy’s death.
Together, Roy and Debbie raised five children and presided over the laughter of eleven grandchildren, with a twelfth on the way. Roy’s grandchildren were the pride of his later years. He welcomed them always with hay rides behind his tractor, troves of mysterious toys, and cookies dropped in their laps when their parents weren’t looking.
Those who knew Roy will remember his cheerful spirit and enthusiasm for life’s small wonders. Pleasures that others took for granted—a simple meal, comfortable shirt, or brief visit to a familiar place—often replenished Roy’s heart, and filled him with stories. We cherished Roy’s stories, whether about golf, Florida, Itasca, or just his long and blessed life. The moral of all his stories was how lucky he was.
Roy is remembered by dear friends and many patients who treasured his care. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; children, Amy (Ben), Mary (Patrick), Sarah (Jim), Roy III (Rachel), and Susie (Ross); his many grandchildren; brothers Mike and Tom; and sister Nancy. Roy is preceded in death by his loving parents, and by his sister, Eileen.
