Robert “Bob” Kaplan, 90, of Lake Barrington, Illinois formerly of Columbus, Ohio, died January 1, 2016. Born February 24, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having been a pilot and instructor of the B-25 Bombers. Following the Air Force Bob became youngest college fencing instructor in the U.S. turning around the OSU program winning the NCAA Championship in 1952. Earning him coach of the year award. He almost made it to the Olympics in 1948. He was a professor of Health Education at the Ohio State University for 35 years finishing his career as Chairman of the Health Department. He always remained a Buckeye waiting to take his last breath after the Buckeyes win over Notre Dame. He will be missed by his family. Survivors include wife of 67 years Beverly (nee Lazovick); Sons Bruce (Debbie), David (Laura), Ron (Jennifer), and Kenn (Lisa); grandchildren Brian (Natalie), Kevin (Natalie), Amy (Shaun), Alex (Alex Rose), Zachary (Erin), Maxwell, Mitchell, Kameron and Kaitlin; great-grandchildren Parker, Alexis, Elijah, Issac, Gabriel, Jordyn, Sydney, Hayden, Wesley, Tallulah and Griffin and sister Diane (Gary) Carroll. He was preceded in death by his sister Eileen Weber and his grandson Jacob. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 11:00a.m. until time of Memorial Service 12noon at Galati's Hideaway 800 Feinberg Ct, Cary, IL. Arrangements and cremation by Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, Bartlett. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Buckeye Bargains, c/o Julie Buckley, 2236 Buckley Rd, Columbus, OH 43220 would be appreciated.
