Elgin

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert “Rob” William Hafer, 71, of Elgin, Illinois, on July 12, 2026. Rob was born on October 11, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to Robert and Audrey Hafer. From an early age, he embodied a strong work ethic, quiet humility, and genuine kindness, qualities that defined the way he lived and the relationships he built. On October 4, 1975, he married the love of his life, Laura McClellan. Together they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage, creating a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and unwavering devotion to their family.

Family was the center of Rob's world. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with those he loved, especially cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. He found happiness in traveling, particularly to Ouray, Colorado and Longboat Key, Florida, tending his garden, preparing meals to share with family and friends, enjoying good food and wine, listening to music, and making lasting memories with the people he cherished most.

Rob will be remembered for his gentle humor, generous heart, steady presence, and the unconditional love he gave so freely. He had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued, and his quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura; his four children, Melissa (Rick) Nickle, Megan Hafer, Melanie (Matt) Mannina, and Robert (Kari) Hafer; and his nine treasured grandchildren, Marley, Maizie, Max, and Morrison Nickle; Madilyn, Maecyn, and Miles Mannina; and Emma and Kinsley Hafer. He is also survived by his sister, Liz Hafer (Ramona Kent); his brother, Michael (Amy) Hafer; his sister-in-law, Theresa Hafer; his nephews, James (Megan) Hafer, Thomas Hafer, and Daniel (Lauren) Hafer; his nieces, Sydney and Abbey Hafer; his brother-in-law, Fr. Robert McClellan; as well as many beloved cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. Rob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Audrey Hafer; his brother, Jim Hafer; and his parents-in-law, George and Lorraine McClellan.
