Richard A. “Dick” James, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was a resident of Streamwood, IL. He was laid to rest privately at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL.
Born on December 17, 1936, in the coal-mining town of Maxwell, Pennsylvania, Richard was determined to forge a life beyond the mines, a vision his father wholeheartedly encouraged and supported. Guided by the strong values instilled by his parents, Richard went on to attend Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on a full football scholarship. In doing so, he became the first in his family to graduate from college, setting a lasting example of determination, commitment, and perseverance.
Richard dedicated 37 years of his professional life to Walgreens. Beginning his career as a stock merchandiser shortly after college, he steadily climbed the corporate ladder through integrity, commitment, and strong leadership, ultimately retiring in 1996 as a Divisional Merchandise Manager at the company’s corporate office in Deerfield, IL. He took great pride not only in his work, but also in the relationships and friendships he built throughout his career.
Throughout his life, Richard was a man who truly lived by the Golden Rule. He was known for his kindness, compassion, humility, and unwavering devotion to his family. He found his greatest joy in spending time with loved ones, cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and enjoying the outdoors. A generous and caring man, Richard quietly supported both organizations and individuals throughout his life, always looking for ways to help others and make a positive difference in his community.
Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen James; his second wife, Ann Marie James; his parents, Richard and Mary James; his sister, Lorraine Platts; and his grandson, Richard Leffel. A devoted husband and caregiver, Richard lovingly cared for both Kathleen and Ann Marie during their illnesses and final years with remarkable compassion, patience, and dignity.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Richard (Elizabeth) James, Karen James, and Lisa (Woody) King; his cherished grandchildren, Katherine, Christina, Matthew, and Ella; and his great-grandchildren, Lauren, Samantha, and Julia.
Richard leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, dedication, and love for family that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those fortunate enough to have shared in his life.
