Phillip (Phil) Vi Tran passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022, surrounded by family in his Streamwood, Illinois home. Phil was born in Saigon, Vietnam on June 27, 1968, and was the eldest son of Nu and Lai Tran. Along with his family, Phil left Vietnam in November 1978 and spent the following year at a refugee camp in Malaysia. On July 23, 1979, the Tran family arrived in the United States after being sponsored by the First Christian Church located in Moline, Illinois.

Members of the First Christian Church helped the Tran family learn English and settle into their new lives, including enrolling Phil and his siblings in school. Phil excelled at school and graduated from Moline High School. He went on to attend and graduate from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology with a specialization in chemistry.

Phil loved to spend time with family, make his famous wonton noodle soup, watch WWE and UFC fights, and fix and upgrade cars. He enjoyed watching Bruce Lee movies and other action films, as well as Marvel movies, and classic comedy shows like, I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Three’s Company, and Gilligan’s Island. Phil also enjoyed swimming, hiking, and drinking root beer floats. His greatest joys were watching his younger siblings grow up, raising his two daughters, and caring for his wife. Phil was a caring, generous, and thoughtful person, always thinking of others and putting them before himself.

He leaves behind his wife Linh Tran and daughters LeAnna Tran and Laila Tran. He was preceded in death by his father Lai Tran, and is survived by his mother Nu Tran, sister Anh Tran, brother Michael Tran (wife Amy Tran, daughter Alessandra Tran, and daughter Camila Tran), sister Lan Tran, brother Matthew Tran (wife Tamara Reed Tran, daughter Celeste Reed, son Ethan Tran, and granddaughter Lily Blair), and sister Christine Tran.

Many agree that they will miss his smile, his endless need to care for you by putting too much food on your plate, and his willingness to always help!

Visitation and services will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm CT at Countryside Funeral Home located at 950 S. Bartlett Road, Bartlett, Illinois 60103.

From 12 - 2pm, there will be a Buddhist prayer service. At 4:30pm, a closing Buddhist ceremony will start and will include a funeral procession to walk to the crematory, where it is customary for the monk to start the cremation. You are welcome to come at any time starting 12pm to visit and take part or observe the services.

All sentiments and gifts of condolences and prayers are greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate food, the family is currently following a vegetarian diet in honor of Phil. The family can eat dairy, including eggs, but not meat, including no seafood. Any monetary donations will be donated to the network of Buddhist temples that Phil was a part of and who will be presiding over Phil’s funeral services. The donations will be used to further the good work that the temples provide to their communities here and in Vietnam.
