Phillip Malarski

Visitation for Phillip V. Malarski of Palatine since 1987, will be held Sunday January 22, 2017, 3:00 – 8:00p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd. (at Barrington Rd.) Streamwood/Schaumburg. Visitation Monday 10:00a.m. until time of mass 10:30a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church 135 S. Buesching, Lake Zurich. Interment Fort Sheridan Cemetery.
Born April 26, 1935, in Chicago, Phillip died Monday January 16, 2017.
Sergeant Major Malarski enlisted in the Marine Corps following graduation from Lane Technical High School in Chicago in 1954. He went through recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA and has served with the 3rd Marine Division, the 87th Special Rifle Company, Co. B, 9th Infantry Battalion, and 2nd Battalion/24th Marines.
In March 1979, he was assigned as the Sergeant Major of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines. During this tour, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, as well as a Certificate of Commendation from the Inspector-General of the Marine Corps. While serving as Sergeant Major of 2/24, he was assigned the additional duty of representing the Marine Corps Reserve at the Department of Defense, Reserve Forces, Senior Enlisted Advisor Council.
Sergeant Major Malarski also served as the Sergeant Major of the 2nd Marine Amphibious Brigade. During August 1984, the brigade successfully participated in operation PHALANX SOUND 11, the largest Reserve exercise since the Korean Conflict.
In 1984 he was selected as the first Reserve Division Sergeant Major and served as the first senior enlisted reserve advisor to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Reserve Affairs.
He retired from the Marine Corps in 1988 after 33 years of service.
Phillip is the beloved husband of Barbara nee Majszak; loving father of Judy (Paul) Roszkowski, Dawn Irvin, Laura (Daniel) Pawlus, Tony (Jennifer) Lebron, Joseph (Shawna) Malarski, and Anna Malarski; cherished grandfather of 23; proud great-grandfather of 3; dear brother of Henry, Jr. (Donna), Michael, and James (Patty).
