Philip Melchert

September 4, 1942 — November 10, 2017

Philip R. Melchert, age 75, son of Robert and Claire (nee Larson) passed away on Friday, November 10. He is survived by Catherine, his wife of 49 years, daughters Karen and Nora (Jeff) Smith, and grandson, Colin Smith.

Phil lived as an only child does - independent, fiercely strong of opinion and generous to all friends and acquaintances. After graduation from Notre Dame College Prep, Niles, IL he attended The University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a degree in Business and Accountancy. He served his country as a Coast Guard Reservist...as he would often say, "Semper Paratus!" He joined Touche, Ross, Bailey and Smart in 1964 from which he retired as a Partner after 25 years. The next 19 years were spent working as CFO for Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, a favorite Touche, Ross client. His career led him into the not-for-profit world of business where he was able to use his business acumen helping those who help others. His desire to serve others was also exemplified by his membership on several not-for-profit boards. Phil loved assisting and guiding people whether it was through an audit, financial advice, or a shot around a tree and on to the green of a golf course. His dry humor may have been lost on a few, but was cherished by his closest friends. Phil was a loving supportive husband, an endearing father who taught his girls they could be whoever they wanted to be. He was a proud Papa to Colin, his only grandson. Both cherished their short time together. Phil was diagnosed with Alzheimer's shortly after he retired. He always said...'"being 4 years old is the best age". And, toward the end, he was able to live as that 4 year old does - awestruck by the simplicity of things, and loving to laugh - before he succumbed to the ugly disease. His family will be forever grateful for the care and compassion that he received at Clare Oaks, Friendship Village, and Alexian Brothers Hospice. To be a nurse, or a CNA caring for folks with dementia requires patience and kindness way beyond what most of us are called to give. Finally, Phil loved a generous pour. He enjoyed hosting tailgates at Notre Dame, Bears games and parties to watch the Masters. We toast our husband, father, grandfather, and friend with a generous pour. We love you and miss you.

Visitation will be from 10:30 to 12:30 on Saturday, November 18, at the Clare Oaks Retirement Center, 825 Carillon Drive, Bartlett, IL. 60103 followed by a memorial service at 12:30 pm.
