Peter Anthony Fio Rito, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community pillar, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026. Born in Chicago on March 26, 1936, Peter led an extraordinary life marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, athletic prowess, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
Peter's professional legacy spans 35 years as the proud owner of Fio Rito's Pizza in Streamwood, IL, a beloved establishment famous for its warm atmosphere and delicious cuisine. Beyond his career, Peter was a man of many talents and interests. An all-state athlete in high school, he earned a full scholarship to play football at the University of Illinois, where his athletic achievements were celebrated.
Service to others was a tenet of Peter's life. As a past president of the Bartlett Rotary Club, he demonstrated leadership and dedication to his community. Peter's passion for youth sports led him to establish the Bill George Youth Football League in Streamwood, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship in young athletes. He was also a life-long Chicago Cubs Fan.
An avid golfer and fisherman, Peter also enjoyed playing softball and cherished his time spent outdoors. However, nothing brought him more joy than his role as "Gramps" and "Papa G.G." to his loving family.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Joan, who was his steadfast partner and greatest love. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Laura (Greg) Mueller and Debbie (Matthew) Werst, and daughter-in-law Diane Fio Rito. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Anthony (Gina), Michael (KC), Nick (Paz), Samantha (Corey), Matthew, Joseph (Taylor), and Daniel. And is continued through his great-grandchildren: Zoe, Ava, Calvin, Peter, Bennett, Richard, Isabel, Nolan, Nico, Dominick, Georgia, and two coming soon, Max and Gabriella. Peter is also survived by his sister, Vinnie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Loretta Fio Rito, and his son, Peter Gabriel Fio Rito.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory of Bartlett on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by inurnment at Bartlett Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Peter's family invites all who knew him to share in loving remembrance and to celebrate a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital, https://www.stjude.org/give.html, a cause close to Peter's heart.
Pete Fio Rito's memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
