Patricia Filan Trudelle

January 23, 1942 — February 3, 2024

Patricia Filan Trudelle; passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on 02/03/2024. Loving daughter of late Catherine (O’Brien) and Patrick Filan; Dear sister to Kathleen (Jack) Dauber, John (Sally) Filan, and late Joseph Filan. Devoted mother of William (Late Natalie) Trudelle, Erin (Brian) Kelly, Cathleen, Bridget (Jack) Hallberg, Kerry (Pete) Quealy. Blessed grandmother (Nana) of Allison (Mike) McGrath; Brittany & Molly Hallberg, Bridget (Michael) Howell, Patrick Filan, Reagan, Ryan, Kiara & Grace Kelly, Rory & Declan Quealy. Treasured Great Grandmother of Faith Howell & Norah Kelly. Aunt, cousin & friend to many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews & wonderful friends.

Born in 1942, Pat was raised on the southside of Chicago, attended Little Flower grade school and she and her siblings grew up building close relationships with the O’Brien and Filan cousins, many of whom lived nearby.  For high school, she attended St Joseph Academy in Adrian, MI. She was a proud alum, having many fond memories of her time there.  Over the years, Pat attended many reunions with her cherished friends.

Pat’s work career started after high school as a nursing assistant on the maternity ward at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, IL. She moved on to administrative work including a stint at McCormick Place in Chicago where she had a chance encounter with Judy Garland when the singer was performing there. Marriage and motherhood were next, and Pat had five children by the time she was 29 years old.  Pat returned to the workforce joining Commonwealth Edison in 1978.  She proudly worked there for 17 years and was often called in to work many nights during major storms to assist and comfort customers during power outages.  She did all of this while raising her five children as a single parent. She always encouraged her kids to work hard and study hard by her example.  Her faith was important, and she was a member of St. Linus Parish while living in Oak Lawn where she volunteered for the “Way off Broadway” charity event for many years. Her other volunteer work was at St. Colletta’s assisting in feeding and caring for babies & working at a resale shop that raised funds for a woman’s shelter.

Pat took great pride in her Irish heritage with many fond memories of visits with the ‘Irish Cousins’ and she cherished the trips she took with her siblings and cousins back to County Mayo to see the Filan farm in Killasser and its ‘40 shades of green.’ She also loved to host the Irish Cousins when they came here to the states on holiday.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and her grand fur babies.  Her first purchase as a “Nana” was to get a custom license plate that said “Nana PT” for all the world to see the joy she had being a Nana.  She spoiled all her grandkids with beautiful dresses/suits for the holidays, toys and her most wonderful hugs. She was always sure to have root beer and vanilla ice cream to make her famous root beer floats (or Sprite floats) during a stay at Nana’s house.

She had many famous quotes/rhymes–some of those include:

  • “If the left one won’t get you the right one will”

  • “You got the right string baby but the wrong yo-yo”

  • “Go plant a tree.”

  • “I’m dancing as fast as I can”

  • “Marvelous, simply marvelous”

  • “If your hot your hot”

  • “What in the Sam Hill”

  • “My Wild Irish Rose”

  • “Have Fun and Make a Memory”

Her favorite toast with any drink on hand (passed down from her mother) –”Down with your eyes, up with your paws, and for God sake make use of your jaws!”

We are all so blessed to have had her in our lives and to have received all the love she gave to us. In the last 15 years, she dealt with the effects of dementia.  We slowly watched as her memory left her, and couldn’t recall places, dates, names, and then the ability to walk and then talk.  She was able to enjoy all music until her final days which was such a comfort to all of us.  If she was having a hard day or got upset, we could start playing some of her favorites from Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, many musicals, and any Irish melody – they would always bring a smile to her face.  We will be forever grateful to the staff of Friendship Village in the “Reflections” building for the care and love they gave to our Mom.  We encourage everyone to go to alz.org to find out more information on how we can all help fight this terrible disease and discover some of the research to help anyone going through this diagnosis.

Mass and celebration of her wonderful life will be May 18, 2024, with visitation beginning at 9:00am and Mass at 10:00am both at St. Hubert Catholic Church, 729 Grand Canyon St, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169, then luncheon/celebration to follow at Maggiano's, 1901 Woodfield Road, Schaumburg, IL 60173. The family requests that any gifts of thanksgiving & memory be made in mom’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/

Until we meet again dear ones! Thank you for loving me as much as I loved you.
