Nestor A. "Tony" Fliris, age 99, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2023. He had been living at Friendship Village, Schaumburg, IL, for the past 5 years.
Nestor was born at the Hotel DeLima in Iron Mountain, Michigan, on April 17, 1924, the son of Anton Fliris and DeLima Boucher. Nestor grew up in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. He attended 8th grade at St. Mary's Training School in Des Plaines, IL. He spent his first year of high school at Lane Tech in Chicago, IL, where he also had a summer job working at the Creamery Package Company. The next three years he attended North Fond Du Lac High School in North Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, where he graduated in 1943.
Tony had enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in February 1943 and became active shortly after he graduated from high school. He remained in the service until World War II ended. He had earned the rank of Second Lieutenant.
When Tony came home, he worked briefly at Hartford Insurance in Chicago. He received a State of Illinois Registration and Education degree entitling him to practice as an apprentice Pharmacist. He did not pursue this further. He went on to work at the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) in Chicago, where he met his future wife, Annette Zielke. Tony and Ann were married on February 21, 1948. Several years later Tony started working at People's Gas Light & Coke Company, as a serviceman, and later as a supervisor.
In 1954 Tony and Ann moved from Chicago to Bensenville, IL, where they raised their three children, Karl, Jane, and Lois.
In 1983 Tony retired from People's Gas. Tony and Ann moved from Bensenville to rural West Fork, Arkansas, where they spent many happy and active years, making some great Wooton Road neighborhood friends along the way. They were gracious hosts to family and friends at their “Longacres” home, as they liked to call it, throughout their years in Arkansas. In 2012, they moved to Schaumburg, IL, to be near family. In his retirement Tony enjoyed spending time with family, listening to music, whistling, feeding and watching the birds, carpentry work, drawing, going for walks, reading, solving the daily newspaper word puzzles, and recording daily activities in his “red book.”
Survivors include a son, Karl M. (Rachel) Fliris of New Hampton, IA; two daughters, Jane E. (Steve) Seeger of Villa Park, IL, and Lois A.
