Michael Salter

February 5, 2016 — June 20, 2022

Michael James Salter was the beloved son of Roy and Jeanette Salter, brother to Henry Salter, godson to Lynette Stegner and Robert Mazeikis, grandson of John and Jannice Mazeikis and the late Jerold H. Salter, nephew to Robert and Elizabeth Mazeikis, Michael Mazeikis and Dani Arnold, Joseph and Alicia Mazeikis, and James and Carly Mazeikis, cousin of Mina, Johnathon, Samuel, Frank, Amelia, Madeline, Robbie, Joey, and Riley, and friend to many. Michael passed away into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ in the early morning of June 20th, 2022 after a long battle with medulloblastoma. He was comfortable and fully embraced by his loving parents as he took his final breath in this world and crossed into eternal life.

Michael was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 2 and relapsed after 18 months of remission in January 2021. Despite the suffering he endured from the disease and its treatment, all who knew him would attest that he was a bright light in a dark world. Michael loved his family deeply and frequently told them so. He and his mom regularly enjoyed baking and making crafts, playing board games, and doing puzzles together. He loved back-scratches from his dad and learning how to use tools to fix things around the house. He eagerly stepped into the role of big brother when he was 3-years-old and as Henry grew, they became the best of friends. They roughhoused, played dinosaurs, and ran around in circles in their front room together. Michael enjoyed spending time at the lake boating, fishing, swimming, and playing on the beach with his family, usually his mom, Grandpa, and Uncle Mike. He adored being pampered by his Gam Gam and horsing around with his Grandpa. He was a collector of rocks, cars, Legos, and pictures and spend much of his free time creating intricate Lego vehicles. He loved to laugh and tell jokes. He attended kindergarten at St. Hubert School and was often cracking up his classmates with his chicken impression. Michael always carried his blankey named Edle with him and delighted in showing her to others. When Michael felt tired from his treatments, he spent time watching funny animal videos on YouTube with his dad and doing academic work on his tablet.

Michael was an inspiration to everyone around him. In his short 6 years on this earth, he endured more hardship than most adults will see in their life and never thought twice about it. He was an innocent and his absence in this world leaves a void that will never be filled. While all of us are left only with the fond memories we have of him, it is certain that Michael is already wrapped in the loving arms of Jesus Christ and making the angels laugh with his chicken impression.

Visitation will be held for Michael at St. Hubert Church in Hoffman Estates Saturday, June 25th from 9-11am followed immediately by the funeral mass from 11am-12pm. At the conclusion of mass, the funeral procession will continue to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Cemetery in Palatine for the lowering of the casket and burial in the section of the Holy Innocents.

All are welcome to attend the visitation, mass, procession, and burial. There will be light refreshments during the visitation from 9-11am in the church basement. It is okay for people of any faith or no faith to attend the mass. It is also advised that those wishing to follow the procession and stay present for the burial to bring an umbrella or even a little fan since the weather will be hot.
