On Tuesday, September 19
th
, 2023, Michael Dennis Koziol, a steadfast partner and loving father, passed away at 72 years old. Michael was born in Chicago, Illinois to Adam & Marjorie (nee Swanson) Koziol. He spent his youth in Elmhurst, graduating in 1969 from York High School. He entered the US Marine Corps shortly after, participating in two tours in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1974. The Marine Corps took Michael to all corners of the world, spurring his fascination with different cultures. It would be in the late 1970s, while exploring the Caribbean on a cruise, where he would meet the woman who would change his life, Bernadette. In 1982, Michael and Bernadette Kathleen Rusinak would vow to love and cherish each other for the rest of their lives. They would welcome a son, Jonathan Michael, on April 15
th
, 1984. They have resided in Hanover Park for the past 28 years.
Throughout their life together, Michael and Bernadette would continue traveling to places in the Caribbean, South America and Central America’s all-inclusive resorts in places like the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Grenada and St. Lucia. It was within Jamaica’s vibrant culture and breathtaking beaches that they found themselves returning time and time again, as if Jamaica itself were a second home.
Back at home, Michael spent many nights working the 3
rd
shift at BEMA Films and Nestle. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting coins & following Chicago sports teams – the Bears, the Bulls and the White Sox. When he wasn’t working or sleeping, he could often be found watching an old country western with a cold beer in his hand.
Michael is survived by his wife, Bernadette (nee Rusniak), his son, Jonathan and his sister Donna (Gary) Dalke. His memory also lives on in the many nieces and nephews living in Illinois, Ohio and Thailand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam Casimir and Marjorie Irene (nee Swanson) Koziol, a brother, David Alan Koziol, his in-laws, Anna (nee Radasky) and Anthony Rusinak Sr, his brother-in-law, Anthony Rusniak Jr and a nephew, Benjamin Adam Koziol.
Arrangements handled by Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory. A family service will be held at his burial site at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois on Friday, September 29
