Matthew Wright

With a smile that could light up the darkest of rooms, a sharp sense of humor that kept everyone around him on guard, and a playful jokester personality, Matthew Wright personified life. Matthew spent each and every day making the world a better place be it with a laugh, a kind word, a hug, or a pat on the back. Those who knew him best knew they were in the presence of an angel.

On Monday, October 5th, that angel spread his wings made his way home to his Savior and joined his mother in eternal life. After a strong, relentless, and courageous 16-month battle with cancer, Matthew Wright passed away at the age of 19.

Matthew was born on March 16, 1990 to Scott and the late Julie Wright, who preceded Matthew in death on June 18, 2006. Matthew loved life, loved his family and friends, loved baseball, and loved his God. Growing up, Matthew was involved in his Youth Christian Group at a local Church in Bartlett, and his faith was a significant source of strength during his battle.

Besides being the man who put others ahead of himself, Matthew was an accomplished baseball player, earning all-conference honors his junior year. After graduating from South Elgin High School in 2008, he was to continue his baseball career at Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., but his athletic plans were put on hold while he fought against the testicular cancer that was diagnosed in June, 2008. Never wanting to give up his dream, Matthew faced his disease head-on so he could reach his lifelong goal of playing college baseball.

His fight was not easy, but he was always in the tender care of a strong, supportive family. Matthew is survived by his adoring father Scott, his devoted and caring step-mother Michelle, his brother and best friend Justin, his younger step-brother Tyler, and his loving and caring girlfriend of six years Melanie Berg. Together with grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and numerous friends they formed a support system that saw Matthew through many, many tough times, but which never wavered in its love, nurturing, and care. They were Matthew’s treasure as he was to them.

Visitation Friday 2:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home & Crematory, 950 South Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd.) Bartlett. Lying in state Saturday 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Services 10:00 a.m. at Village Church of Bartlett, 601 West Bartlett Rd., Bartlett.
Interment St. Michael the Archangel.
