Mary Virginia McCray Smith was born on May 23rd,1935 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky from the union of Arthur McCray and Mary Frances Cattlett. Sisters Loretta and Marie McCray die at birth and her mother die when Mary was an infant.
Mary was a toddler when her grandmother Mattie and husband John Montgomery moved her to Chicago Heights, Il. 1938.
Mary graduated from Bloom Township High School in 1953 and attended business school where she focused on secretarial skills. Mary’s work history ranges from factory work, administrator assistant at Allis Chalmers to her retirement from POET of Suburban Cook County Employment Training for Employment and Employers. Mary was an Employment Training Specialist where she was a team player and enjoyed helping people find meaningful employment. Mary mastered the skills of assessment counselor, and she received the Outstanding Staff Award in 1990.
Mary married her second husband Alfred Lee Smith in 1967 and lived in Calumet City, Il. After the death of Alfred, Mary moved with only child Denise in 2018 to Streamwood Il. Where she was a member of Jehovah Witness of Schaumburg Congregation.
Mary received peace and assurance of her salvation (John 5:24) June 21,1980 as a Jehovah Witness with the Calumet City Il. congregation. Mary departed from her earthly family peacefully August 20, 2024, at her daughter’s home surround by Denise, Jessica Causey her bonus granddaughter, neighbor Mark Hauserman, loving caregiver Patricia Greer and Hospice nurses.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, father, grandmother, grandfather husbands.
She leaves her devoted and loving daughter Denise Daniels, her bonus granddaughter Jessica Causey (Michael) and bonus grandson Josiah, her best friend Deidra Stinson and cherished cousins, family, friends and neighbors too numerous to name and her Jehovah Witness Congregations Calumet City and Schaumburg.
Visitation Saturday 11:00-12:00 September 21st, 2024, at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, Bartlett.
Memorial 12:00-1:30 following the visitation.
