Mary N. Romero (nee Richardson), 90, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022. An avid Chicago White Sox and college sports fan, Mary was known for her independence.
 
 Mary Marcia Nicholson was born the last of seven children to Lillian Victoria Albrecht and Robert Joseph Nicholson on May 4, 1932. Mary grew up in Wheaton, IL. As a child she loved sports and was a bit of a tomboy.  She graduated from Wheaton Community High School in 1950.
 
 In 1953, she graduated from The School of Nursing of The Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. She completed her bachelor's degree in nursing at The University of Pittsburgh in 1956.
 
 During her career Mary did many types of nursing including psych, cardiology,
 
 general-medical-surgical. Emergency-room and orthopedic.
 
 In the 1960’s Mary raised her son Andrew James Romero in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Grandma Lillian Nicholson lived a considerable time with her and Andrew.
 
 Mary, Andrew, and Grandma Lillian moved back to the Chicago area in 1972. During the 1970’s Mary worked as an Associate Director of Nursing at MacNeal Hospital.
 
 In 1981 Mary Marcia embarked on a new adventure. She accepted a position as
 
 Director of Nursing at Admiral Bristol Hospital in Istanbul Turkey. During her 3 years in Turkey Mary made many friends. She also studied Turkish culture and Sufism.
 
 Mary Marcia kept regular contact with extended family and friends throughout the years. In her matter-of-fact way, she supported and maintained heartfelt interest in each individual person. She enjoyed being informed about nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grand nephews.
 
 Mary Marcia was devoted to her family and expressed appreciation for having a home with her son Andrew, his wife Mary, and their daughter, Rachael. Mary Marcia was very proud of her family and Rachael. Mary Marcia was a woman of integrity and always tried to maintain the highest of moral standards in her thoughts and actions; she also tried to be well-read and well-informed. She was concerned with national and world current events and had a particular interest in environmental and Middle Eastern issues. She was very opinionated (as were all the Nicholsons), expressing her views intelligently and persuasively.
 
 She enjoyed hiking, cooking, and reading.  For a good number of years, she enjoyed college basketball games and tournaments, attending many of them with her nephew, Peter Nicholson.
 
 Beloved wife of the late Leo; loving mother of Andrew (Mary) Romero; proud grandmother of Rachael V. Romero; dear sister of 6 late brothers and sisters; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews. Visitation Thursday, September 15 from 11:00am until time of service 1:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 950 South Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd.), Bartlett.
