Mary Margaret Gundy, 98, of Bartlett, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023. She was born on February 26, 1925 in Albia Iowa to Casper and Margaret Mary Manley.
Mary grew up in rural Albia along with her brother John and a large contingent of first cousins who were all very close. She was the last surviving and are all now reunited. Her brother introduced her to one of his Navy friends, Bill, the man she would marry and have three daughters. They married in Chicago where he was stationed. Because of Bill’s job, they lived in small and big towns all over Iowa, where she took care to make sure her family home was nurturing and welcoming. Mary was not only a homemaker but a working woman in jobs that were of service to others. Being a devoted mother, she always made sure her children felt loved and encouraged them to spread their wings, try different things. A wonderful role model of perseverance, determination and welcoming of others. She was very loving and accepting of her daughters’ partner/son-in-laws. Mary was also an adoring grandmother to her four grandchildren, loved playing with them, attending their activities and seeing them grow into adults.
Mary was an avid gardener, planting flowers and vegetable gardens in all the places she lived– always her pride and joy. She was an excellent seamstress; sewing curtains for every home, her daughters’ clothes and every Christmas their new dolls had full wardrobes. She even made one of her daughter’s wedding dresses.
Mary made friends no matter where she lived. She and Bill were part of a large senior group in Wayne Township while living in the neighborhood of Fair Oaks in Bartlett. After Bill passed, Mary moved into Clare Oaks/The Oaks of Bartlett joining some of her neighbors. She made lasting friendships with many of the residents in independent and assisted living and enjoyed all the things to do which kept her very busy. She was very grateful of the many staff who took care of her during her ten years there. She touched the hearts of many and will be dearly missed by all.
