Margaret Ann Mathis, 80, of South Elgin, Illinois, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026.
Margaret was born on January 1, 1946. She lived a life defined by love, kindness, and dedication to her family. Her warm heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering support touched the lives of everyone, fortunate enough to know her.
Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Derrell Mathis and her sister Betty Sullivan. Together, Margaret and Derrell built a family founded on love, laughter, and lasting memories.
She is survived by her loving children Bret Mathis and Brooke Adam) Rzeppa, her cherished granddaughter Kenzie Rzeppa, and her siblings Thomas (Nancy) Higgins, Eileen (Steve) Gaffney, Maureen Higgins, and James Higgins. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Margaret shared a special bond with her granddaughter, Kenzie, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. Whether attending events, celebrating milestones, or simply spending time together, Margaret treasured every moment they shared. Their relationship was filled with love, laughter, and countless memories that Kenzie will carry with her forever.
Margaret formed lifelong friendships throughout her years in education. She especially enjoyed gathering with Lois, Helen, and Carol, from her teaching days, sharing meals, stories, and laughter that spanned decades. She also loved playing bingo, where her competitive spirit and joyful personality always shined through. These friendships and simple pleasures brought her happiness throughout her life.
Margaret's greatest joy was her family. She found happiness in spending time with those she loved and creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Her strength, compassion, sense of humor, and caring nature left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Though she will be deeply missed, Margaret's legacy of love, generosity, and devotion to family will live in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
Visitation Tuesday, June 23, 2026 from 10:00am until time of funeral service 12:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 95 S. Gilbert St. (at State St.), South Elgin. Entombment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery. Info (847)289-8054
