Margaret Ann “Maggie” Barton, née Marass, died Jan. 13, 2019 at her daughter’s home in Streamwood, Illinois, at the age of 96. The eldest of four children, she was born Oct. 3, 1922, to Joseph and Rose (Butz) Marass in Dundee. She married the love of her life, Bruce Barton, on Oct. 3, 1958 in Elgin. She moved to Harvard and had a daughter, Cindy Jo. At a young age, Maggie began her career working at the Elgin National Watch Company. She worked for Illinois Bell for more than 30 years, starting as a switchboard operator in Elgin, becoming the chief operator in Woodstock, and ending as the manager of Operator Services in Rockford. After retiring, she was an active member of the AT&T Pioneers. Maggie cherished spending time with her family and devoted her free time to caring for her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, sipping vodka martinis and proudly tending to her flower garden, but there was nothing Maggie loved more than cheering on the Chicago Cubbies. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and three brothers, William, Donald and Richard. She leaves behind a daughter, Cindy (Daniel) Schmidt, and three grandchildren, Spencer, Rose and Diana.
A memorial service will be held at Living Lord Lutheran Church, 1044 Congress Drive, Bartlett, IL at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
