Lois Maschio

August 9, 1928 — November 29, 2020

Lois Elaine Maschio (nee Russell), 92, of Medinah, IL passed away Sunday, November 29, 2020. Lois was born in Huntley, IL and the fifth of seven children. She began her lifelong career in healthcare in nurse’s training at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. After becoming a registered nurse, she moved to Chicago and worked at the TB Sanitarium, then as a surgical nurse at other local Chicago hospitals while attending DePaul University at night to earn a bachelor's degree. Never one to stop learning, she went straight on at DePaul to complete her master’s degree, and ultimately became an instructor at Rush Presbyterian Saint Luke’s Medical Center College of Nursing (now Rush University). Lois took time off to raise her family, but when her children were grown, she returned to work in home healthcare and went back to the classroom again. In 2003, she received her doctoral degree from Rush University College of Nursing. She is believed to be the college's oldest graduate. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Lois will be forever remembered as a lifelong student, teacher, advocate and humanitarian. She selflessly gave of her time and knowledge to the community, and everyone who knew her was inspired by her dedication to healthcare and particularly her tireless advocacy for the health and well-being of women and children. She was an active member of Roselle United Methodist Church, and client mentor and board member of Stepping Stones for Women of Domestic Violence.
Lois was the beloved wife of the late Arthur; loving mother of Arthur, Jr., Theresa Damato (Tim Wagner), and Marianne (David) Paredes; proud grandmother of Nico Damato, Kaylee Laverty, and Maycee Paredes; dear sister of Estelle (the late Curtis) Schneiderwind, Richard (the late Suzie) Russell, the late George Russell, the late Kathleen Lucas, the late Raymond (the late Dorothy) Russell, and the late Donald (Harriett) Russell; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.
