Lewis Cleghorn

Lewis Travis Cleghorn, 86 of Marengo and formerly of Elgin and Hoffman Estates; is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn, nee Baker; his sons Neal (Karen) of St. Charles, and Bradley (Rebecca) of Marengo. Lewis was the dear grandfather of Michael, Joshua, Caleb, Rachel, Andrew, Haley and Jenna; beloved brother of Floydene (Allen) Rush and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.


Lewis was born in 1936 in Alleene, Arkansas to Floyd and Coelia Cleghorn. After graduating from Sheridan high school in 1954, he went to Chicago and there met his wife of 65 years. Together he and Evelyn moved to the suburb of Hoffman Estates in 1965 and shortly thereafter became founding members of Evangel Assembly of God church by hosting its formative gatherings in their home.


Lewis worked for many years for the Teletype corporation which became part of AT&T. He traveled the country attending many trade shows and conventions. After retirement he began his second career in the funeral service working for both Ahlgrim and Countryside funeral homes. This was Lewis’ mission field, sharing the love and comfort of Jesus in both word and deed to those walking through life’s most difficult moments.


Lewis loved to fish and golf, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. Lewis brought his quick wit, joy, and laughter into every conversation. His smile and companionship will be dearly missed.


Lewis was preceded in death by his son Steven, his parents, and his siblings Coy, Theola, Odean, Thomas, and Rodney.


Visitation was Sunday, December 4th, 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 950 South Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd.) Bartlett. Funeral Monday, December 5th, lying in state 10:00 am until time of service 11:00 am at Evangel Church 5700 Bartels Rd, Hanover Park, IL 60133. Luncheon to celebrate Lewis' life was held at Evangel Church immediately following the service.


Interment was private at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
