Lawrence Kancler

July 4, 1943 — June 20, 2024

Lawrence R. Kancler (Larry / Mr. K) was born July 4 th , 1943, and passed away on June 20 th , 2024, surrounded by his loving family and caring health professionals. He is survived by his wife, Elaine (nee Keeffer), his sister-in-law Linda (Gary) Marron, his daughters Bridget, Amy (Bassam) and Tracy (Caleb), and grandchildren Lilah and Emmett Hanson and Jaclyn Durdle.

Larry grew up in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, the son of Raymond and Bernice. On April 25 th , 1964, he married Elaine, his high school sweetheart, best friend, and the great love of his life. Together, they created a family, a community of friends, rewarding careers, and a wonderful life.

Larry attended Nativity of Our Lord Elementary, De La Salle High School, DePaul University, and DeVry Institute of Technology. He and Elaine lived in Oak Park and River Grove before finding their way to Streamwood in 1968. There, they raised three daughters and became very involved with St. John the Evangelist Parish. Larry was an engineer with AT&T for 35 years, was ordained a deacon with the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1983, and over time, became a Certified Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Care at St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates. Larry’s love of technology, cars, and driving came together in his post-retirement ‘fun’ job driving new-model cars for Marquardt Buick Customer Service.

Larry was most proud of his family, telling everyone about their successes and adventures. He loved living in Edgewater, Elgin, where he and Elaine had the great fortune to find yet another community of friends, especially the Monday Morning Men’s Coffee Group, the Driveway Group, and the Games Night Group.

Larry had a unique sense of humor, a deep love of family and friends, a servant’s heart, and unwavering dependability. He truly enjoyed coffee and conversation with his daughters and friends, mashed potatoes and gravy, and going out to eat! He loved music and theater – especially when his kids or grandkids were involved. He loved travel, numbers, gadgets and mornings. He worked hard, loved well, and was generous. As an organ donor, his final gift was a donation of his hazel eyes.
