LaVerne H. “Mike” Meyer, formerly of Bartlett, passed away on Thursday, February 7th, at the age of 88. He was born on May 29th, 1930, in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Walter and Esther (nee Oltendorf) Meyer. He had been a resident of the Bartlett area all of his life and was a graduate of Elgin High School, Class of 1948. He was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone for 37 years, retiring as a Trunk & Toll Engineer in 1985. He engineered the first fiber optic cable in the 815 area code between the Joliet and Morris offices. Mike was a veteran of the Korean War serving from 1951-1953 in the 25th Infantry Division, 14th Infantry Regiment, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mike was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a former member and Past President of the Bartlett Lions Club, the Telephone Pioneers, and Elgin American Legion Post 57. He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bartlett, serving as Past President, Treasurer and Trustee of the congregation. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jean (nee Hansing) Meyer, whom he married on October 24th, 1953. He is survived by two daughters; Debra (Jim) Robar of Sycamore and Sandra (Jeffrey) Rice of Algonquin, and a son, Gary (Holly) Meyer of St. Charles. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Kelly Robar, Kari (Brad) Cieslak, Noah Meyer and Hayley Meyer; and five great-grandchildren; Payton, A.J., Cash, Hank and Mack. Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 16th, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1116 E. Devon Avenue, Bartlett, the Reverend Bauman officiating. Burial will be private for the family at the Bartlett Cemetery, Bartlett. Visitation will be Friday, February 15th from 3:00 – 8:00 PM at the Countryside Funeral Home, 950 South Bartlett Rd (at Stearns Rd), Bartlett and from 10:00 until the time of service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bartlett.
