Lachman V. Chablani, Md

Lachman Vishindas Chablani passed away on July 25, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving children.

Lachman was born in 1937 in the province of Sindh, a part of India at the time. The family migrated to Bombay, India in 1947 during the partition of India. Guided by his mother and eldest and beloved brother, Nanik, Lachman continued his schooling in Bombay and graduated from the GS Medical College/KEM Hospital of University of Bombay. After graduation he came to the United States in 1963 and began his medical specialty training in Philadelphia. After his Internship in Philadelphia, he trained in Pathology at the New York Medical College in New York City and subsequently at Mercy Hospital of Toledo, Ohio with a Fellowship in Oncologic/Tumor Pathology. He became an American Board Certified Pathologist in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. During his Internship in Philadelphia, he met the love of his life Nancy (Nancie) Elizabeth Blake, a Nursing School student, whom he married in 1967. They were deeply devoted to one another and enjoyed 56 years of marriage. Lachman and Nancie initially spent a year living in India, but then returned to Toledo where they lived and raised four children together for the next 52 years. In Toledo, Lachman joined the practice of Associated Pathologists at Mercy and St. Charles Hospitals where he practiced until he retired. During his practice he was elected and served as Chief of Medical Staff at Mercy Hospital, Chief of Medical Staff at St. Charles Hospital, and was also elected as the President of The Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County. After retiring as Chief of Pathology he was appointed as the first Chief Medical Officer at Mercy - St. Charles Hospital. He was also a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of Toledo Medical College where he had received Teaching Excellence Awards from the Residents in Pathology.

Lachman was an active civic volunteer and committed to the Toledo area community. His service included the United Way Board Chairman of the Physician Section Fund Raising; the American Red Cross, Medical Advisory Committee, Blood Services of Northwest Ohio; the ARC Regional Services Board; Mobile Meals of Toledo, Advisory Board; Ohio State Medical Association, Lucas County Delegation Chairman; International Institute, Board of Trustees; LPA Board, Ladyfield School of Toledo; and the Association of International Physicians of NWO. He along with his wife Nancie were Founding Members of The Hindu Temple and Heritage Hall of Toledo in the 1980’s where they dedicated countless hours of service and support. Lachman was a deeply respected and honored member of the Indian-American community in Toledo, particularly during the 1970’s and 80’s as the Indian community in the region continued to grow, form its identity and establish its roots. Lachman was the recipient of many awards and accolades, including: Outstanding Asian Indian Award presented by Gov. George Voinovich; "Key to The Golden Door Award” from the International Institute of Greater Toledo; and Recognition and Proclamation by City of Oregon, Ohio Mayor Marge Brown in 2008.

In 2022, Lachman and his wife, Nancie, moved to Chicago to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Their time in Chicago was brief, but they developed meaningful new friendships at the Brookdale Senior Living community along the beautiful Chicago lakefront. They enjoyed stunning views of Lake Michigan from their apartment and dining with friends every evening. In January 2023, Nancie, the love of Lachman’s life and the center of love and affection of the entire family, passed away leaving a deep void with Lachman and the extended family. Lachman is survived by his adoring children and grandchildren: daughter Dr. Malini Gillen and her husband Dr. Peter; son Aneel Chablani, Esq. and his wife Kate Mitchell, Esq.; son Dr. Raj Chablani; daughter Anisha Medley and her husband William; and his grandchildren Noah, Josh, Maggie, Anna, Malcolm, Ravi and Kaya. Also surviving are his sister Dr. Indu Nainani and her husband Gobind, and brother-in-law David C. Blake, Jr. Esq. and his wife Sara. Lachman became the cherished and respected patriarch of his large extended Indian family and his legacy and love lives on with nieces and nephews and their children throughout the United States and the world. Preceding him in death were his parents Dr. Vishindas and Sita Chablani, brothers Dr. Nanik and his wife Sheela, Dr. Pribhu and his wife Barkha, Maj. General Dr. Pritam and his wife Koshi; sister Hardevi and her husband Anand Golani; Dr. Gope Chablani; Parents-in-law David, Sr. and Virginia Blake and sister-in-law Connie Mulvena.

Funeral Services will be held at Countryside Funeral Home in Bartlett, Illinois on Saturday July 27 at 2:30 P.M. with officiating by Hindu Priest Pandit Anant Dixit from the Hindu Temple of Toledo. A celebration of Lachman’s life planned by his children will take place later in the year in Toledo, Ohio.
