Kathleen Howe Gabbey, December 22, 1942 - July 20, 2017:
Kathy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just before Christmas in 1942. She spent her childhood in Milwaukee and White Fish Bay, Wisconsin. She graduated with a B.A. in French from from Lawrence University before she became a teacher. She completed her Masters Degree at National Louis University. She taught French at Miner Junior High School, Elk Grove High School, and Rolling Meadows High School. Her teaching career spanned from 1965-2002. While at Elk Grove High School, she met Karl-Heinz Gabbey and they married in 1973. They also met their lifelong friends, fellow teachers at Elk Grove High School, whom they’ve loved as family for nearly 50 years. During Kathy's childhood, she learned to cook and to bake from her mother, Naomi. She continued her love of cooking and baking throughout her entire life. Everyone who knew her enjoyed her grand meals, sweet treats, and cakes that truly became works of art. Kathy wasn’t just the “life of the party”; she was “the party.” She enjoyed sharing her cooking and baking skills with friends and family, including her little granddaughter, Megan. Kathy had a variety of interests and enjoyments, among which were reading, traveling, and bridge. Kathy was an avid reader and an avid bridge player. Her bridge parties became elaborate events that her partners always looked forward to attending. She wanted nothing more than to make everyone happy. She often prepared home-cooked meals for friends and neighbors who needed assistance. Kathy’s life can be summarized with one word: selfless. Her love, generous spirit, and compassion stand out as her hallmarks. Her family, friends, and students knew her as “Kathy,” “Kath,” “Aunt Kathy,” “Tati Kathy,” “Madame Gabbey,” “Omi,” and of course, “Mom.” Kathy is survived and loved by her husband, Karl-Heinz, her daughter, Lara, her son-in-law, Rob, her son, Karl-Heinz, her daughter-in law, Atsuko, and her grandchildren, Megan and Kano.
