John Mavros, of Hampshire, passed away peacefully Wednesday night while being held by his only daughter Chrysoula. He was the dear husband of the late Anna; beloved father of Chrysoula (Menelaos) Zannis and Milton Mavros; cherished grandpa of Maria - Kanella, Anna and Angelika. He has many nieces and nephews both in the Chicagoland area and still back home in Greece. He was also preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters Taxiarhis, Maria, Konstandinos, Efthymia, Despina and Panagiotis and also his parents Miltiaces and Chrysoula, nee Katsoyiannos. John came to this country with his family at the age of 44 with only one suitcase. Through hard work and determination he tried to provide a better life for his family. He worked as a supply attendant with Precision Steel of Franklin Park for 18 years. While living in Greece he lived and worked on a dairy farm. There were no days off on the farm as the entire family pitched in to help. That attitude of an honest days work helped the family survive in America. He learned to put his thoughts on paper which he would proudly pass on to his family over time. Visitation will be Saturday April 20th from 9:30 am until the time of his service 10:00 am at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church 525 Church Road Elgin. Interment Prairie Cemetery in St. Charles.
