Jeanette Mcmullin

July 21, 1930 — February 17, 2017

Jeanette McMullin (nee Wolter) of Elgin died February 17, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Francis; loving mother of Dennis (Mary), David (Vicki) and Katy; grandmother of 5 and great grandmother of 2; dear sister of Robert, the late Doreen and the late Shirley.

Jenny McMullin was a strong, committed and tireless, yet warm and loving person with a positive attitude. She was smart and adaptable to every situation that came her way or was thrust upon her, but never lost her focus on family and values.

She was a constant in the family; always there for anyone, but especially for us, her children. She and Dad taught us the value of hard work and passed on the stubbornness to keep going, even when things aren't all sunshine and roses, but not so much that she and Dad didn't get in the way or let us each find our own way and learn those lessons ourselves.

For Dennis, outgoing and gregarious - he didn't need a shove to get out there, but he did occasionally need a line to pull him back when he was too adventurous for his own good.

For David, a softer touch and a gentle push were needed to get him to take those first steps and develop the confidence to succeed in the world.

For Katy, she needed time to find her own way, and they gave her the freedom to wander a little, while making sure she had a safety net, whether she knew it or not.

While the family was central to her, she had a drive to do better personally. Armed with a high school education, a sharp mind and a quick wit, she always made the best of what came her way. She knew that success was not just measured in dollars, but also in the relationships you build and the way you touch others' lives.

An example of that balance was how she ran the 7-11 in Roselle for years. Long before convenience stores became 24-hour operations, she saw that the people of the community were making an early commute and wanted and needed a cup of coffee and a warm smile to start their day. So without any fanfare, she routinely rose at 3:00am to open the store by 4:00am to make the lives of those who lived in the area, a little better. That commitment to service made the little 7-11 on Hattendorf more that a place to buy a gallon of milk or grab a paper. It became the modern "country store" where socializing and commerce were blended to a sense of community.

After leaving the store after Dad passed, she moved on, but didn't stop learning and making a difference. At Clear Air Engineering she started fresh, in an industry she knew nothing about. Growing and learning and making the day-to-day operations better and brighter.

When she finally did retire, she took to it with the same enthusiasm: sewing many ambitious sewing projects and quilts and completing various craft projects. Always an avid reader, Jenny now had the time to read as much as she wanted. She continued to maintain strong ties to her family which connect us to this day.

While she has left us physically, her spirit and the values she instilled in us will live on in all those she touched.
