James C. Smith “Slim Jim”, 69, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at St. Alexius Medical Center after a five month battle with cancer.
  
  Born October 1, 1940 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Paul and Lena Smith. He moved to Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated from Jefferson High School before attending Purdue University where he majored in Electrical Engineering. Jim worked as a Graphic Artist for Jewel Food stores for 20 years and then for Ace Hardware for 28. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Jim served from 1963 -1965 in Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post 5151 in Streamwood and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
  
  Survivors include wife of 45 years Diana D. (nee Ryan); daughters Annette Diane (Michael) Crouse and Nicole Marie; grandchildren USMC Pfc. David Alan and Catherine Elizabeth Crouse.
  
  He was preceded in death by an infant son Alan Robert, parents and in-laws Robert H. and Catherine D. Ryan.
  
  Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home, 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd, Streamwood. Funeral service Thursday 11 a.m. Following the services cremation will be private at the Countryside Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Illinois Cancer Society, First Christian Church of Elgin, Bartlett Baptist Church or charity of choice.
