James Horton Palmer, a beloved educator, adventurer, and family man, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the age of 82. A resident of Bartlett, Illinois, James was born on August 2, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the late Paul E. Palmer and Mary Palmer.

James lived a full and inspiring life dedicated to education and the written word. With a Master's degree in Education, he spent 35 years shaping young minds as an English and Literature teacher at Sandburg Middle School. His passion for nurturing knowledge extended to his role as an adjunct professor at Elmhurst College, where he continued to inspire students with his love for language and literature.

A man of diverse interests, James was enchanted by the ocean. He found peace and joy in scuba diving and swimming, activities that allowed him to embrace the serenity of the sea. His love for the beach was a constant theme in his writing, as he was a published author and an active member of the Maui Poets Society, DuPage Writers Group, and the Barrington Writers Group.

James's heart belonged to his family, whom he adored and cherished above all else. He and his loving wife, Marlene, shared 56 wonderful years together, creating a lifetime of cherished memories. His daughters, Jennifer McNally and Sarah (David) Schultz, and grandsons, William McNally and Nathan Schultz, were the center of his world. James delighted in taking them on the most memorable vacations, ensuring that every trip was filled with adventure and laughter.

James was a faithful member of Immanual United Church of Christ, Bartlett where they were married in 1970.

He is survived by his devoted wife Marlene; daughters Jennifer McNally and Sarah (David) Schultz; grandsons William McNally and Nathan Schultz; and siblings Tom Palmer, John Palmer, and Peggy Klausa. James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Paul E. Palmer and Mary Palmer.

Services are private.

James’s legacy of love, learning, and laughter will forever be treasured by his family, friends, and former students. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
