James Ebert

May 2, 1944 — August 1, 2022

James Ebert, 78, of Schaumburg, IL, died August 1, 2022. James was the beloved husband of Jeri for 58 years. He was the loving father of Michael (Renee), Matthew (Betsey), Kristin, Joshua (Jennifer) and Rebecca. He was the beloved Papa to Jacob, Rachel, Kaitlyn and Isabella. He will also be missed by his granddaughters of the heart Amber, Isabella and Olivia. Additionally, he was the proud step-grandfather of Nicholas (Cari), Amber, Michelle, Amanda (Jesse) and cherished step-great-grandfather of Anthony, Elijah, Ari, Kaitlyn, Bailee, Sienna, Isabella, Sam, Kaiya, Aidan, Everleigh and Ryker. James is survived by his dear sisters Eunice (Rev. Gerald) and Juanita. He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Myra, his brother and close friend David (Joanne) and his dear sister Linda. James was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

As a child, James excelled at inventing games with his brother, David, including one particular game with baseball cards and marbles that no one else quite got the full set of rules on. He cherished his time with his family including many foster children that were cared for by his parents. In his youth, James was active in youth ministry with Walther League and as a youth director at his church.

At St. Peter Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, IL, he helped to create a Junior High Youth Ministry, founded the Social Ministry Team, served as Sunday School Superintendent and additionally served on the Board of Elders.
James was an avid gardener. He enjoyed reading and was a diehard Cubs fan though, of late, he was happier watching his garden grow. While in the hospital, James continued to enjoy his garden by watching videos taken by family or later via a webcam that he could control remotely. He enjoyed traveling, photography and bird watching—though this latter activity involved a large investment in bird seed for the squirrels.

Over many years, James enjoyed coaching baseball and softball and teaching Sunday School. He held several vocations including but not limited to Produce Manager at National Tea, Insurance Salesman for Lutheran Brotherhood and Custodian and bus driver for Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Des Plaines, IL. He was a hard worker with a heart for serving. Despite working many long hours, he always found time for family dinners, family devotions and after dinner trips to the local pool.

After retiring, James wasn’t content with gardening so he went back to work nearly full-time at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Roselle, IL. He worked as a custodian and Sunday School Superintendent and helped make calls to members in need. Even while in the hospital, he expressed disappointment that he could not continue to make the outreach calls.

James had a passion for youth ministry throughout his life. Though he frequently expressed a desire for a more formal vocation in teaching and youth ministry, the Lord had other plans for directing this passion. Through his years as a parent, coach, bus driver, custodian, coworker, mentor, mentee, teacher and student he served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with reckless abandon. He will be missed deeply by family and friends though we rejoice that his sins were covered by the death and resurrection of Jesus and that he is forever with his Heavenly Father.
Romans 12:6-8 (ESV)

6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
