James Matthew "Jim" Camberis, 56, of Carol Stream for 26 years, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2025. A proud Chicagoan, Jim was born at Edgewater Hospital in 1968. He spent his early childhood in Niles, before moving to Hoffman Estates in 1973. From an early age, he was curious and had an interest in mechanics and how things worked.
Jim graduated from Hoffman Estates High School (HEHS) in 1986 and went to college at Harper College and NIU’s extension campus at Harper. Early in his career, he worked for Mark Shale, first as an associate, and then becoming a candidate in their management training program. In 1995, he began his career with AT&T, working in various roles within Customer Care and Customer Operations. Jim would have celebrated 30 years with AT&T this April.
One of Jim’s lifelong passions was music. While at HEHS, he performed in the school’s elite Madrigal Choir, as well as school musicals. Although he did not continue to sing regularly as an adult, he continued to support HEHS’s music program for many years, chaperoning the group’s annual fall trips to Stronghold Castle in Oregon, Illinois. He was a self-proclaimed ‘audiophile’ and loved good sound, in all forms, especially when listening to favorite artists or watching movies.
Jim was also a car enthusiast. He loved reading about cars, the technology behind them, and how to detail them. He owned several Acuras over the years and enjoyed reading posts and occasionally sharing in Acura Owner communities on Facebook. He loved Formula One (F1) car racing, and could be found watching races every Sunday morning from March through December.
Like his father, Metro, and sister, Carole, Jim was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed watching his ‘Cubbies’ on Marquee Sports Network and taking in games in-person when he could. One of his greatest joys was seeing the team win the World Series in 2016.
His greatest love, by far, however, was his family.
Before he was a husband and father, Jim was a loyal son, brother, uncle, and godfather. He showed love to others through acts of service. He was always anticipating the needs of others and could always be counted on for support.
Jim and Susan met in 1992 through Jim’s mom, Adrienne, and married on April 18, 1999. They joined the Disney Vacation Club just before getting married, and were fortunate to be able to take multiple trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Florida. They took many trips as a couple and later with the family, with one of Jim’s favorite trips taking place in March 2023 to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort (staying in one of their ocean-front beach cottages). For their ‘Silver Jubilee’ in 2024, they took a “once in a life time” trip back to Hawaii to see their daughters perform with Glenbard North’s Music Department at several sites on Oahu, including Pearl Harbor.
Jim and Susan welcomed their twin daughters, Makena and Eniko, into the world on May 29, 2008. Jim was an exceptional father – attentive, present, caring, compassionate, and selfless. He was constantly thinking ahead to what ‘the girls’ would need next – whether it was new winter coats, boots, spring jackets, or new school clothes. Their care and wellbeing were his top priority – always. ‘The girls’ were his pride and joy from the beginning of their lives until the end of Jim’s journey.
Over the course of Jim’s 10-month courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), the activities he was able to engage in shifted, but his care for others and curiosity did not. He continued to anticipate the family’s needs and worked to fulfill them. And, he continued to watch and enjoy YouTube videos related to car detailing and fixing things. Even though he was not a ‘camper’, he also enjoyed watching ASMR camping videos (especially Atik Ailesi and Ryu Camp).
One of Jim’s cousins recently expressed, “Jim was one in a million.”
Those who were fortunate to know and love him would agree.
May his memory be eternal.
