Eventually, they were granted political asylum and found their way to a new life in Chicago, IL. In 1966 they became proud naturalized citizens of the United States.
Irma raised a daughter and a son, retiring after 30 years with her husband to Wisconsin, living both in the towns of Hazelhurst and Friendship. She loved to paint in oil and acrylic, producing a wonderful collection of birds which were her favorite subject. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting. In 2011 she lost her love Joseph, her husband of 57 years. Her later years were spent in assisted living in Schaumburg, Illinois.
