Visitation for Helen Cwerenz nee Sawicky, 99, of Streamwood will be Sunday, May 21 from 3:00-8:00pm at the Countryside Funeral Home 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd. (at Barrington Rd.) Streamwood/Schaumburg. Funeral Monday 10:15am to Church of the Holy Spirit. Mass 11:00am. Interment St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, River Grove.
Helen on Friday, May 19, 2017, at home surrounded by her family. She was born February 17, 1918 in Stambaugh, Michigan to Peter and Mary (Kaletta) Sawicky. She married Arthur Cwerenz of Chicago, Illinois on June 7, 1947 at St. Philomena Church in Chicago.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Laurie) Cwerenz of Johnsburg, and her daughter Bonnie (Allan) Berkner of Streamwood; five grandchildren; Kristy(Bill) Fry of Crystal Lake, Jim (Stephanie) Berkner of Chicago, Amy (Josiah) Oliver of Elko, MN, Diana (Joshua) Avart of Pittsburgh, PA and Brian Cwerenz of Washington, DC as well as four great grandchildren; Austin and Alex Fry, Avery Oliver and Eliza Berkner.
Helen was preceded in death by Arthur; her husband of 65 years, as well as by her parents and two brothers; Peter and John.
Helen grew up in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan, the daughter of an iron ore miner. She moved to Chicago to study at a secretarial school in the 1940’s. After marrying Arthur they lived in Chicago until 1973 when the family moved to Addison. She was active in church and school groups throughout her life. In 1991, Art and Helen moved to Elgin to be closer to family. Helen was a loving wife and mother and always held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her bright smile and her willingness to help wherever she could.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be made to Rainbow Hospice.
