Gesine Horvath

May 14, 1938 — May 31, 2020

Gesine Horvath 82, (nee Heymann) formerly of Schaumburg, passed away Saturday, May 31,2020. She was born in Konigsberg, Prussia (Germany).

Beloved wife of the (late) Frank for almost 43 years; loving mother of the (late) Susanne Barnett, step-daughter Margaret (Imre) Dobovanszky; cherished grandma of Michael Barnett and Julie (Patrick) O’Connor; and 2 great-grand kids; dear daughter of the (late) Felix J. and Gertrude A. (nee Büttner); cherished sister of (late) Susanne Sippel nee Heymann (William); Peter Heymann (late Wilhelmine); (late) Jutta Heymann; Barbara Preuss nee Heymann (late Hermann); Armin Heymann (Luzie); fond aunt of 11 nieces and nephews.

Gesine was born on May 14, 1938 in Königsberg, Prussia (Germany). In her early years, the family enjoyed summer outings to the Baltic Sea. Late in the Second World War, Gesine fled with her mother and five siblings, as the Russian troops advanced and eventually invaded Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). Unfortunately, Gesine's paternal grandparents remained in Prussia and did not survive.

The family became displaced persons (DPs) and were given shelter with other DPs in a large estate/castle in Lengenfeld, Germany. The children attended school and had many adventures while living there. The British and American Allies ceded some land to the Russians in order to be able to have a portion of Berlin, so Russian soldiers took over the Lengenfeld area and guarded the border nearby. Gesine's mother sent the children over the border often in order to buy food. Eventually, the family again fled the Russians and settled first in Bad Kreuznach and then Frankfurt. Gesine was a qualified commercial apprentice and worked at RKO and in a hospital before immigrating to the US in 1961.

Gesine met her husband, Frank Horvath, at Café Berlin in Chicago. They were married on December 23, 1961 and their daughter, Susanne, was born in 1962. That same year, Margaret (Frank's daughter) immigrated from Hungary and joined the family.

Gesine was a Motorola employee for over 30 years. She worked nights for many years. As a data entry supervisor, she worked hard, was very fair, and was well-liked by her coworkers.

Gesine did not like to cook, but she was a good cook. She loved to do German crossword puzzles, she loved marzipan, and she liked to sing when Frank played the accordion. She visited the casino occasionally and loved going out to dinner.

Gesine was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Funeral will be private for the family with a burial at St. Michael The Archangel Cemetery, Palatine, IL at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 6, 2020.

A Celebration of her life and a luncheon will be at a later date.
