Gerry Martin Covey, 92, of Elgin, and formerly of Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, and Mount Prospect, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and friendship.
Beloved husband of Joy (nee Paulus) for over 63 wonderful years; loving father of Robert (Krista); proud and adoring “Papa” of Kayla and Kelsey. Gerry was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Mame Covey, and his siblings Patsy, Melinda, Julia, Mary Lynn, Ben, and George. Gerry is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a loyal friend and neighbor who could always be counted on to provide a smile, a helping hand, or a great story.
Gerry was also preceded in death by his oldest son Christopher, and is now reunited with him to endlessly discuss airplanes, United States History, and the Chicago Cubs.
Gerry was born and raised in Kansas, Illinois where he graduated from Kansas High School. He joined the United States Air Force shortly after high school, and traveled the world with the greatest branch of the military. While stationed at O’Hare Airport, he met his future wife and was married to Joy in 1961. In 1965 they moved to Mount Prospect where they built a home filled with love and laughter while raising their two sons.
In his retirement years, Gerry was active in the Lutheran Church of Martha and Mary, the Poplar Creek Bowling League, as well as the Veterans Group of Dell Webb. Gerry also enjoyed his later years by traveling the world, cruising the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean, and spending time visiting family and close friends throughout the country. He also spent time providing his son with financial recommendations, and cheering on his two favorite teams the Cubs and the Bears.
The role he cherished most was that of “Papa.” Gerry was the biggest fan of Kayla and Kelsey, attending softball games, basketball games, dance recitals, school concerts, or other school events. He celebrated their every achievement and was always there with a warm hug and a heart full of pride. He also had a special fondness when he attended the annual Veteran’s Day celebrations with his grandchildren at their schools.
