Frank J. Mercurio, 80, of Schaumburg, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023.
Born and raised in Oak Park, Frank graduated from Fenwick High School in 1961. He developed a passion for electronics and amateur radio, earning his Ham Radio license as a teenager. He served two years in the Army as a radio operator and then made a 40-year career in two-way radio and paging. Frank was a 65 year member of the Ham Radio community (call sign W9FM) and communicated regularly with fellow Hams all over the globe, including his brother, Cosmo, in Alaska.
He married the love of his life, Patricia, in 1966. They moved to Schaumburg in 1968 where they raised three sons. His family was always his number one priority. He loved the yearly family camping vacation–towing the family pop-up camper to national parks, national forest service campgrounds, and state parks from coast to coast. Later in life he was the proudest fan in the stands at the countless sporting events and concerts in which his grandchildren participated.
Beloved husband of Patricia (nee Speh); loving father of John (Amy), Jim (Dr. Kimberly), and David (Lisa); proud grandfather of AJ (Jordan), Allison, Maria, Julia, Peter, Thomas, James, Olivia, Evan, and Elena; dear great grandfather of Payton; cherished brother of Anna (Joseph) Elarde, Cosmo (Judy) Mercurio, and Laura (Steve Neuhalfen) Gurske; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 22 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, 333 S. Roselle Rd. (1/2 mile south of Irving Park Rd.), Roselle. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Schaumburg. Interment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel.
