Evelyn M. Kondratowicz (nee Wheeley) was born in Chapeau, Ontario, Canada to Thomas J. Wheeley and Rose A. Daniels. Her siblings include the late Daniel J. Wheeley (Margaret) and Lillian M. Wheeley, (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada). Widowed five years into their marriage, her mother moved the family to Pembroke, Ontario, Canada for her children to start their schooling.
Too young to enter Nursing school in Canada at age 17 – and, at the insistence of her mother who wanted her daughter to have a career -- Evelyn Wheeley moved to Fargo, North Dakota to attend St. Joseph School of Nursing, affiliated with the Sisters of St. Joseph of which her aunt was a Nun within the religious order. Her course of study included college coursework at North Dakota College of Agriculture. She graduated with a Registered Nursing degree in 1948. Wanting to gain additional nursing experience, she re-connected with St. John’s Hospital, associated with the Nursing School for clinical training, for an additional year to rotate on various medical services.
Thereafter, Ms.Wheeley moved to Chicago for job opportunities in Nursing. Over her career, she worked as a Medical/Surgical Nurse at (the former) Passavant Memorial Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and (the former) Grant Hospital. During this time, she became a U.S. citizen.
Evelyn Wheeley married Walter F. Kondratowicz, M.D. in1953 and was a loving and devoted wife for over 64 years until his passing. They had four children, including Steven (Nancy), John (Cheryl), Michael, and Diane. Ever committed to family and steadfastly devoted to their children, Mrs. Kondratowicz regularly volunteered her time to assist with various activities at her children’s schools, including serving as chaperone during field trips. She and her husband also lovingly nurtured and supported their children’s various interests and endeavors. The Kondratowicz family lived in Chicago, Sauganash, and Lincolnwood, subsequently relocating to Bloomingdale, IL with her husband.
She is grandmother to Andrew, D’Arby, Kelsey, Jillian, and Robert as well as great grandmother to six children.
Mrs. Kondratowicz and her late husband enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the Alexian Brothers and cherished their friendships with many of the Brothers. She was an active member of the hospital’s (previous Chicago location) Women’s Auxiliary.
Throughout her life, Evelyn Kondratowicz was an avid reader, astute at geography, a wonderful conversationalist, an expert (self-taught) seamstress, interested in cooking, nutrition, and exercise, took pleasure in tending to her plants and container gardening, and greatly enjoyed regularly attending educational and other programming in her community.
