Eustacio Magpantay

March 29, 1940 — June 30, 2020

Eustacio Maitim Magpantay was born on March 29, 1940 at Tanauan, Batangas, Philippines. He graduated from University of the East in 1962 with a Bachelors of Commerce, major in Accounting. He was married in court to Remedios Ruiz Magpantay on April 6, 1962 and in church on May 6, 1962. He has five children, Edita Urgena (Bartlett, IL), Edna Magpantay-Monroe (Waipahu, HI), Ric Magpantay (Geneva, IL), Ray Magpantay (Chicago, IL) and Ethel Cabalfin (Gurnee, IL). His son in laws are Napoleon Urgena, Michael Monroe and Caesar Cabalfin. He has one daughter-in-law, Katherine Magpantay. He has 11 grandchildren (Anthony, Christiane, Zachary, Timothy, Breanna, Isabella, Christian, Donovan, Faith, Hope and Gabriel) and one great grandchild (Jason).

Eustacio was a hardworking man and values family as the basis for his existence. He worked at Filipinas Hotel in the Philippines before his immigration to Chicago, Illinois in 1977. He worked at Encyclopedia Britannica in accounting when he arrived in Chicago for many years and retired from the National Bank now known as Chase Bank in 2005. His eldest daughter, Edita describes her father as always keeping everyone safe and protected in many aspects. Ric, his oldest son remembers his father as always caring for other people first before himself which shows his selfless attribute.

Eustacio and Remedios Magpantay met in 1957 at a bus stop in Veirnes Santa, Ana where both of them lived in the same neighborhood. He introduced himself as “on the level” which is what his last name means. Eustacio is described by his wife as Mabait (Kind), Mapagmahal (Loving), and Mapagunawa (Understanding). Most of Eustacio’s family and friends call him many nicknames like Tacio (by relatives), Boy (by close friends) and Max (at work). He was very endearing to many because of how he laughed. His youngest son, Ray, recollects his father as having an infectious personality. His laughter made people happy as shared by both his sons and his grandchildren. He always took pride in how he presented himself and made sure he was well dressed; everything must be terno (matching outfits).

Eustacio never skipped a day without listening or watching news as he always liked to be well informed. He also enjoyed playing Sudoku as it helped sharpen his mind. He felt that education was the greatest gift he could give his children. His second child, Edna recalls her Dad’s famous advice “If you want to be successful, you will do whatever it takes with integrity to be successful; otherwise you are just making excuses not to succeed”. He admired his children quietly in their successes.

He was very meticulous about cleaning, especially washing dishes. His attention to details was very impeccable. He always kept notes and had the most artistic handwriting. He was very observant and loved to people-watch.

He loved food, especially pizza from Due, sinigang (sour soup), his wife’s pancit bihon, ribs with sweet chili sauce and kare kare. He loved to drive his Honda to nearby cities but enjoyed Canada a lot because of Niagra falls. He was an active person: playing pelota (raquet ball) and tennis with his wife during his younger years and walking many miles from their apartment to downtown Chicago during his later in years. Even though Eustacio was not a rhythmic dancer, he loved to show his moves and would try to sing. Ethel, the youngest child, reminisces that her father had a tremendous carefree joyfulness and love shared through frequent memorable laughter.

Devotion and grit were Eustacio’s core values. He will be forever remembered with his contagious laughter and love of life.
