Obituary for Emma Mercado Guevara

Emma Mercado Guevara, lovingly known as Mami, Mande, and Manda, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, on April 23, 2026, in Winfield, Illinois, at the age of 87.

Emma was a woman of deep Catholic faith, she instilled strong values of respect, responsibility, and devotion in her family. She was a loving, compassionate, and devoted woman whose kindness and generosity touched everyone she met. She was independent, strong and admirable in her strength, yet gentle and kind, always putting her family first. Her warm, joyful spirit made others feel welcomed and cared for, and her wisdom and grace continue to inspire us every day. She was truly a remarkable and beautiful soul whose love will live on in all of us.

Emma was born on February 28, 1939, in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to Salomón Mercado and Enriqueta Rodriguez. She grew up in the countryside near Villagrán in a small, rustic adobe home surrounded by an orange orchard. Her childhood was simple and peaceful, filled with time spent outdoors—running through the fields, swimming in the river, climbing trees, and helping her parents tend their small family store. She also cared for her younger siblings, showing early on the nurturing spirit that would define her life.

At the age of 15, Emma pursued her education in secretarial studies, though she was unable to complete her diploma when her family moved to the United States. Once there, she continued to support her family by helping raise her siblings and later working to contribute to household expenses.

At 18, Emma met Edgard, and they were married in 1958. Following the passing of her father, the couple moved to San Salvador, El Salvador, where they built their life together. On April 15, 1959, they welcomed their first child, MariLisa, who sadly passed away just days after birth—an immeasurable loss that Emma carried with strength and grace. In the years that followed, they were blessed with four children: Maria del Socorro, Maria Elisa, Claudia Enrriqueta, and Jose Edgard.

Emma and her family lived in San Salvador for over 20 years before eventually making their home in the United States. She worked at Sloan Valve and Glen Oaks Medical Center, but her most cherished role was that of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lovingly cared for her grandchildren, traveling often to Texas to spend time with Carlos and Diego, and creating countless memories in Illinois with Billy, Gabby, Alec, Emma, Kristina, and David. She embraced the joy and challenge of caring for them with open arms and a full heart.

Emma leaves behind a beautiful and growing legacy. She is survived by her children: Maria del Socorro and her husband James; Maria Elisa and her husband Carlos; Claudia Enriqueta; and Jose Edgard and his wife Gloria. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Carlos and his wife Michelle; William and his wife Malgorzata; Diego; Gabriella and her husband Adam; Alec; Emma; Kristina and her husband Nicolas; and David. Her great-grandchildren—Eva, Jacob, Lucas, Elena, Lorelei, Mia, Kayden, and Mason—along with Baby Sister Wolski on the way, were a constant source of joy and pride in her life.

Emma was preceded in death by her infant daughter, MariLisa; her parents, Salomón Mercado and Enriqueta Rodriguez Mercado; and her siblings Mario, Rolando, Olga, Flora, Roberto, and Salomón.

Emma had a deep love for cooking and took great pride in preparing meals for her family. She created a wide variety of dishes, from traditional Mexican favorites like tamales, enchiladas, and tacos to Italian pastas and Chinese-inspired cuisine. She also delighted in baking birthday cakes, cardenal, cookies, cupcakes, and pies. Food was her way of bringing people together—she found joy not only in preparing and sharing her meals, but most of all in savoring them alongside those she loved.

She was proud of her Mexican heritage and loved sharing it through food, music, and tradition. She enjoyed listening to mariachi music, dancing, and celebrating life with those she loved. Emma was an elegant and independent woman who always carried herself with grace and took pride in her appearance.

Emma loved to travel and explored many parts of the world, including Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. She treasured these experiences and enjoyed capturing memories through photographs to share with loved ones.

She was actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives—participating in school activities, cheering them on at sporting events, and supporting them every step of the way. She also had a generous heart and gave back to her community in meaningful ways. During Christmastime, she traveled to her hometown in Mexico to support families in need, bringing toys for children, preparing meals, and contributing to church projects. Her kindness reached far beyond her immediate family.

Emma’s love, strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family are the legacy she leaves behind. Her independence and resilience defined her, and she served as a guiding example for generations. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Visitation will be held at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, 333 South Roselle Road, Roselle, Illinois 60172, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

A Funeral Mass will follow at St. Walter Catholic Church, 130 West Pine Avenue, Roselle, Illinois 60172, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, 1400 South Wolf Road, Hillside, Illinois 60162.

Emma fue una mujer de profunda fe católica; inculcó en su familia sólidos valores de respeto, responsabilidad y devoción. Fue una mujer amorosa, compasiva y dedicada, cuya bondad y generosidad conmovió a todos los que conoció. Era independiente, fuerte y admirable en su fortaleza, pero a la vez dulce y bondadosa, siempre poniendo a su familia primero. El 15 de abril de 1959, dieron la bienvenida a su primera hija, MariLisa, quien tristemente falleció pocos días después de su nacimiento—una pérdida inmensurable que Emma llevó con fortaleza y gracia. En los años siguientes, fueron bendecidos con cuatro hijos: María del Socorro, María Elisa, Claudia Enriqueta y José Edgard.

Emma y su familia vivieron en San Salvador por más de 20 años antes de establecerse finalmente en los Estados Unidos. Emma fue precedida en la muerte por su hija recién nacida, MariLisa; sus padres, Salomón Mercado y Enriqueta Rodríguez Mercado; y sus hermanos Mario, Rolando, Olga, Flora, Roberto y Salomón.

Emma tenía un profundo amor por la cocina y se enorgullecía de preparar comidas para su familia. La comida era su manera de unir a las personas—encontraba alegría no solo en preparar y compartir sus platillos, sino sobre todo en disfrutarlos junto a sus seres queridos.

Se sentía orgullosa de su herencia mexicana y le encantaba compartirla a través de la comida, la música y las tradiciones. Disfrutaba escuchar música de mariachi, bailar y celebrar la vida con quienes amaba. Emma era una mujer elegante e independiente que siempre se conducía con elegancia y orgullo por su apariencia.

A Emma le encantaba viajar y exploró muchas partes del mundo, incluyendo México, Centro y Sudamérica, Europa y el Medio Oriente. Atesoraba estas experiencias y disfrutaba capturar recuerdos a través de fotografías para compartirlas con sus seres queridos.

Participó activamente en la vida de sus hijos y nietos—participando en actividades escolares, apoyándolos en eventos deportivos y acompañándolos en cada paso de su camino. También tenía un corazón generoso y contribuía a su comunidad de maneras significativas. Durante la época navideña, viajaba a su pueblo natal en México para apoyar a familias necesitadas, llevando juguetes a los niños, preparando comidas y colaborando en proyectos de la iglesia. La velación se llevará a cabo en Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, 333 South Roselle Road, Roselle, Illinois 60172, el miércoles 29 de abril de 2026, de 7:30 a 9:30 a.m.

La misa fúnebre se celebrará a continuación en St. Walter Catholic Church, 130 West Pine Avenue, Roselle, Illinois 60172, a las 10:00 a.m.
