Elvera Boswell

November 1, 1928 — September 23, 2014

Elvera Boswell, born November 1, 1928, died September 23, 2014.

A nurse in the truest sense of the word, Elvera loved her years caring for her patients and found her calling and mission in proudly carrying out this noble profession.

The eldest of two daughters, born in Palatine, IL to Alfred and Emily Moehling, Elvera received her nursing degree in 1949 and worked at Hines Veteran Hospital. She moved to Woodstock in 1953, where she worked tirelessly as a nurse in various departments at Woodstock Memorial Hospital from 1962 – 1986.

During that time, Elvera became head nurse of the emergency department, and she was proud to be one of the first instructors for the EMS and paramedics program for McHenry County. She returned to college and got her B.S. in Health Arts from St. Frances University in 1983 at the age of 55. She became the TB nurse for McHenry County in 1986.

Elvera thoroughly enjoyed her years as a nurse in various capacities and found that working kept her intellectually stimulated and active. She moved to Elgin in 1994, where she worked part-time for a communications company until retiring at age 83 in 2011.

In addition to being the proud mother of four daughters, Elvera took great joy and pleasure in being a grandmother and being active in the lives of her five grandchildren. She enjoyed travel, gardening, and more recently, long lunches with her good friend Nancy Ingold.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marilyn Huffman; survived by her daughters: Mary Beth Shahoda (Kim Larsen) of Elgin; Peggy (Ed) Callahan of Mequon, WI; Teri (Mark) Merrill of Winchester, VA; and Susan Shahoda (Ben Kufrin) of Venice, CA; and her grandchildren: Michael, Matthew and Daniel Callahan, Madeline and Hamilton Merrill.
