Elaine S. “Maki” Egli, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on July 30, 2024.
Born in 1934 to parents Peter and Ann (Vallis) Siavelis in Chicago, Elaine graduated from Austin High School and obtained her BA in English from Roosevelt University. She married Earl Egli in 1957 and was an English teacher for the Chicago Public Schools until they started their family. She lived her long and rich life in the Chicago area and was the matriarch and touchstone for her extended Greek American family.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Earl and her brother and best friend, Bill (Vicki) Siavelis. She is survived by her daughters Linda Egli, Debra Egli, Julie (Matt) Thomas and her beloved grandson Henry, who was the apple of her eye. In addition, she leaves behind many close family members that include her dear cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A life-long lover of the Arts, Elaine enjoyed attending plays, musical theater, and ballet performances. She loved watching classic movies, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She had an enthusiasm for life and enjoyed visiting with family and friends, breakfast and lunch dates, traveling, going to her local library, Starbucks coffee, Chicago-Style hot dogs, the Chicago Cubs and chocolate.
Elaine was so many things to the people in her life - loving mother, aunt, cousin, friend, and confidant. She had a unique way of making people feel heard when she talked with them. She lived her life with love, patience, resilience and, especially, laughter. Elaine was loved by many and left an indelible mark on all who were lucky enough to have known her.
Interment service will take place at Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin and will be private. A memorial to celebrate Elaine’s life will be held in October.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
